The IPCC predicts that by 2050 we will require 10 billion tonnes of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) annually. The world urgently needs solutions
We’re building technology to clean the atmosphere on a massive scale
Carbon Removal
Working with nature, we permanently remove carbon dioxide by transforming residual biomass into biochar
Technology
Slíglas is developing innovative biochar production technology which can process high moisture content residues
Circularity
In tandem with CDR, we take low value residues and return high value biochar which enriches agricultural land
Biochar is a novel CDR technology with the potential to remove billions of tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere in the coming decades
How does biochar CDR work?
- Biochar CDR exists at the junction of nature and technology
- Plants and trees capture carbon dioxide through photosynthesis
- Microbes who break down biomass respire this carbon dioxide back into the air
- By transforming residual biomass into biochar we stabilise carbon in a solid form, preventing microbes from breaking it down and preventing CO2 from re-entering the atmosphere
Our Solution
1. Residual Biomass
Slíglas currently uses forestry and sawmill residues as input for our biochar. Our ambition is to quickly transition to lower value residues streams which are unlocked by our pre-drying process. By sourcing locally and co-locating we reduce transport emissions
2. Processing
Our proprietary, continuous reactors efficiently convert biomass to biochar using a process called pyrolysis. This involves heating biomass to a high temperature in the absence of oxygen. The process is self sustaining with pyrolysis syngas combusted to drive heat generation
3. Sequestration
Slíglas partners with local farmers to spread biochar on agricultural land, safely returning carbon to the earth while also improving soil health and allowing farmers to reduce fertiliser use and limit nitrogen runoff
4. Monitoring
Careful measurement, reporting and verification is core to our philosophy. We adhere to stringent standards so that you can be confident our credits represent premium carbon removal. We are working to achieve official certification in the near future

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Biochar?
It’s a stable, carbon rich material which we can generate and return to the earth by spreading on land. It’s formed by pyrolysis of residual biomass which would otherwise rot, break down and release carbon captured during photosynthesis back into the atmosphere
How much do Biochar carbon removal credits cost?
Biochar credits are typically sold between €100 and €200. The reason for this spread, is that different projects all over the world each have unique circumstances and costs. Many credits are priced using a cost plus model
What's the difference between removal and avoidance carbon credits?
Carbon credits range from avoided emissions such as renewable power projects, through to more impactful removal credits e.g., afforestation. The most valuable removal credits are those associated with novel methods such as Biochar or Direct Air Capture which are quantifiable and have high permanence
How much do I have to offset?
As much or as little as you’d like. Net zero is a journey, and we recommend ramping up to your goals over time
I can't afford to offset, is there anything else I can do?
We understand that offsetting can be costly and the CDR industry is working hard to make carbon removals more accessible. Focus on continuing to reduce emissions and we’ll be here when you’re ready to remove
